Navigating CE Requirements for RNs in Iowa

CE Requirements for Iowa RNs:

• In Iowa, RNs are required to complete 36 contact hours of continuing education every three years to renew their licenses.

Special requirements 

Every 5 years, RNs must complete: 2 hours of dependent/child abuse. This course is provided by the state, Nurse.com cannot be used to fill this requirement. 

License renewal process 

The license renewal process for RNs in Iowa is conducted online through the Iowa Board of Nursing's website. Here's how it generally works: 

1. Access the Iowa board of nursing portal: Nurses must log into their account on the Board's website. 
2. Complete the renewal application: Update personal and professional information, attest to the completion of the required CE hours, including any mandatory abuse training, and respond to questions about any disciplinary actions or convictions since the last renewal. 
3. Pay the renewal fee: The renewal fee for RNs in Iowa is $99. 

It is crucial for nurses to keep documentation of all completed CE activities for at least four years, as they may be audited by the Board and asked to provide evidence of their CE. 

Timelines and important dates 

Nursing licenses in Iowa are renewed every three years on the 15th day of the month of the licensee’s birth month.  

To prevent any lapse in licensure, RNs are advised to begin the renewal process and complete their CE requirements well before their license expires, you can start the process starting 60 days before the expiration date. The Iowa Board of Nursing sends out reminders as the expiration date approaches, but maintaining awareness of the license status and renewal deadline is the responsibility of each nurse.
