California nurses need to renew their license every 2 years and complete 30 hours of CE. View the full education requirements for California RNs below.

In the dynamic and demanding field of nursing, staying current with the latest developments is crucial for providing quality patient care and maintaining professional standards.

For registered nurses (RNs) practicing in California, continuing education (CE) plays a pivotal role in ensuring ongoing competence and knowledge enhancement. Let's discuss the CE requirements for nurses in the state of California  and explore what's needed for license renewal and how to fulfill these requirements.

CE Requirements for California RNs

1. Hours required:

California mandates that RNs:

  • Complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years to renew their licenses
  • Complete one contact hour related to implicit bias (within two years of initial licensure)

2. Content requirements:

While the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) doesn't specify courses or topics for CE, it requires that the education is relevant to nursing practice. This allows RNs flexibility in choosing courses that align with their professional interests and areas of specialization.

3. Approved providers:

CE courses must be provided by approved organizations. California RNs can fulfill their CE requirements through various avenues, including:

  • Accredited educational institutions
  • Professional nursing organizations
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Online platforms offering approved courses such as Nurse.com

4. Verification:

RNs must keep records of their completed CE courses for at least four years. These records serve as proof of compliance in case of an audit by the BRN.

Renewal Process:

  1. Application: RN license renewal in California is primarily done online through the BRN's website. The renewal application typically becomes available 90 days (about three months) before the license expiration date.
  2. Fee payment: A renewal fee must accompany the application. The fee to renew an active RN license on time is $190. The fee is subject to change, so it's important to check the current fee schedule on the BRN website.
  3. CE submission: During the renewal process, RNs are required to attest to completing the requisite CE hours and upload their CE completion certificates.
  4. License renewal: Upon successful completion of the renewal application process, the BRN will issue a new license valid for the next two years.

Meeting CE requirements is essential for RNs in California. Staying informed and engaged in continuing education enhance their skills, keeps them current with industry trends and helps them deliver optimal care.

The variety of options available for fulfilling CE requirements allows nurses to choose courses that align with their professional goals and interests.
