Navigating CE Requirements for RNs in Alaska

Alaska nurses need to renew their license by November 30 of every even-numbered years and complete 30 hours of CE.

Continuing education (CE) is a critical aspect of maintaining licensure and competency for registered nurses (RNs) in Alaska.

CE requirements are designed to ensure that nurses remain informed about the latest medical practices and technological advancements and uphold the highest standards of patient care. Below, we share details on the CE requirements for Alaska RNs and the license renewal process.

CE Requirements for Alaska RNs

To renew their licenses, Alaska requires RNs to complete two of the following options every two years:

  • 30 contact hours of continuing education
  • 30 hours of participation in uncompensated professional activities
  • Work 320 hours as an RN

The CE hours must be completed through courses or activities approved by the Alaska Board of Nursing (BON) or a provider accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Types of acceptable CE activities

CE activities in Alaska can vary widely, providing nurses with flexibility in choosing topics and formats that best fit their needs and interests. These activities can include:

  • Online courses: Many organizations offer online courses that are convenient for nurses with varying schedules.
  • Workshops and seminars: Attending live events allows opportunities for interaction and networking with peers.
  • Academic courses: Nurses can also count academic coursework related to nursing toward their CE credits.
  • Publication in a peer-reviewed journal: Nurses who publish articles in recognized nursing journals can receive CE credits for their scholarly work.

License renewal process

The license renewal process for Alaska RNs is conducted every odd-numbered year and can be completed online through the Alaska BON's official website. Here are the steps involved in the renewal process:

  • Log into the Alaska nurse portal: Nurses must access their account on the Alaska Nurse Portal.
  • Complete the renewal application: Fill out all required fields and answer the practice questions.
  • Submit CE credits: Enter details of the completed CE activities.
  • Pay the renewal fee: Currently, the renewal fee for RNs is $200, but fees are always subject to change.
  • Nurses are advised to retain their CE certificates or records for at least four years, as the BON may audit them to verify compliance with the CE requirements.

 Timelines and important dates

Nursing licenses in Alaska expire on November 30 of every even-numbered years regardless of when the license was first issued, with the exception of new licenses issued within 90 days of the expiration date — these will expire during the next biennium.

Nurses are encouraged to complete their CE activities and submit their renewal applications well before the deadline to avoid any last-minute issues that could result in a lapse of their licenses.

Continuing education plays an essential role in nursing, especially in a diverse and geographically challenging state like Alaska. By staying up to date with their CE requirements, Alaska RNs not only comply with regulations but also enhance their skills and improve their quality of care.

Nurses must stay informed about the specifics of their CE obligations, plan their education activities carefully, and keep accurate records to ensure a seamless renewal process. Through diligent planning and a commitment to ongoing learning, nurses in Alaska can continue to thrive in their careers while meeting professional standards.
