How Can Someone Figure Out Whether a Person Is Truly an RN?

Question:

Dear Donna,

How can one investigate whether a person legitimately is an RN, is really a nursing graduate and passed the board exam?

Nylev

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Nylev,

You should be able to check with the board of nursing in the state where a nurse is practicing and verify his or her license. This usually can be done online and is public information, meaning anyone can access it. And because every licensed nurse would have had to produce evidence of having completed an accredited nursing program, the board verifies that information before issuing a license. Find contact information for state boards of nursing at (www.ncsbn.org/contactbon.htm).

Hospitals and other employers routinely verify licenses.

Best wishes,
Donna
